2020 started unbelievably with an epidemic that spread throughout the world. Until now, there are 47 countries affected, 82,294 confirmed cases (~95% of them are in China), more than 2,700 deaths (1). All of these happened in just two months. First severe spread Asia, then Europe and Middle East, then America. Right now, Africa is the only left continent that stays mostly outside of the epidemic. However, it is the matter of time until it reaches there. Besides, Africa is also struggling with another “epidemic”: locust swarms.
In Czech Republic where I am residing, all surrounding countries have reported affection. Recently, there was an outbreak in Italy, making it the third highest country outside of China. 20 countries in European region have reported confirmed cases already. However, except Italy, Germany, France, UK, and Spain, the rest only have one or two cases. Hence, overall situation in CR is not that severe to freak out, nevertheless, it is crucial to stay alert and maintain good hygiene protection. Italy was once far from epidemic, but now it is in the spotlight. It may happen to any other countries, including CR, if it does take protective measures. People, including my friends and classmates, are discussing heatedly about the situation “virtually”, but life is still going on like normal. I wonder if Czech people will finally show their emotions when there is a surge here.
I’m checking my stock to see if there is any risk in case a spread happens here in Brno. Essentials are basic food like rice, noodles; dried stuff like beans, oatmeal; paper. This would help my family to survive for a while. In the worst case if the city is isolated, there would be measures to deliver food to families, hence I don’t think we should worry much.
If Europe collapses, at least we know where the weakness is.
My curiosity rests with, whether at the end, who will control the outbreak better: democracy or socialism?
P/S: yesterday we still went to a mini concert in Brno. The stage was small, but the room was jammed with people. Obviously Covid-19 does not prevent us from enjoying our favorite artist.
